harvest feast

Saturday, September 18, 2010
Doors open at 5 p.m. | Dinner served at 6 p.m.

Main Hall, Saanich Fairground
1528 Stelly's Cross Road, Brentwood Bay

The Saanich Peninsula is the traditional bread basket of the Greater Victoria area. Today, the Peninsula has the greatest concentration of active farm stands in British Columbia. At a time when interest in "buy local" is growing and there's talk about a "100-mile diet", we have the good fortune to be able to celebrate our food and agricultural heritage with a 10-mile harvest dinner (with the exception of dairy, coffee and tea). We'll also have Vancouver Island cranberries from Yellow Point, but will provide local options, like oregon grape jelly and red currant jelly.

We believe it's important for the whole community to share in this celebration and we're doing our best to make this special event an affordable evening out.

So what's for dinner? To kick off the evening, we will offer a tasting of locally-made wine (Muse Winery) and cider (Sea Cider Farm and Cidery). There will be a small tasting fee on top of the dinner price, for those who want to participate. We're also working on offering wine with dinner, too (not included in dinner price). The Harvest Feast will focus on traditional harvest foods, like locally-raised turkey and beef with lots of Saanich Peninsula vegetables (we'll also have vegetarian options). You'll also be able to enjoy breads made with locally-grown wheat. Dessert? It's pie heaven – blueberry, blackberry, raspberry, pumkpkin, strawberry! And if you haven't tasted apple juice made by Farmer Phil, then you're in for a real taste sensation.

This event is organized by community colunteers (the "Feasties") and hosted by the North and South Saanich Agricultural Society (www.saanichfair.ca) and the Southern Vancouver Island Direct Farm Marketing Association. We meet at monthly at the Screaming Bird Cafe at Breadstuffs Bakery in Brentwood - thanks to Rita and Dale for lending a helping hand. Sometimes, we do a meeting someplace special, like the Muse Winery! Other bakeries and cafes will also help by preparing desserts... This year we are working with Taste of Life Catering of Sidney to help pepare and serve the dinner. We also appreciate the generous contributions of our corporate sponsors: Islands Savings, Thrifty Foods, and the Fresh Cup Roastery Cafe.

Volunteers
In order to make this a truly community event, we could use help from the community with food prep (like shucking corn) and setting tables. If you are interested in helping, call Robert Thompson (250-652-4691).
